Warsaw 2008 - 2018
Ewa Meissner

The project "Warsaw Life 2008-2018" consists of photographs documenting the city's everyday life in the span time of ten years. Two decades have passed since the fall of Berlin Wall and Poland's capital and its life style have transformed. It was a slow process. Nowadays, with neat side walks, hole-less streets, bicycle lanes, eruption of skyscrapers, polished monument buildings, parks equipped with exercise fixtures for kids, the city seems to fit more into the 21st century. It also makes its citizens feel more respected. The center Warsaw street scene is dominated by wide avenues, people in rush, heavy traffic and pollution. In recent years elegant boutiques moved to malls, giving space to banks and second hand clothes stores. Positive changes also took place as more coffee shops and cafeterias appeared on the sidewalks. The project "Warsaw Life 2009-2010" does not try to settle accounts with the passed twenty years of freedom from the communist regime. It does not pose questions or look for answers. It subjectively documents the here and now. Warsaw is a city that is very undecided, agressive, arrogant, bold and vain, ambitious. It is colorfull in details. And it is those details that focus the project's attention. Amidst the dominant color of gray, winter's white and summer green, the dashes of color spring out, inviting to follow as they unveil their stories.
