The city of Sochi in Krasnodar Kraj, Russia, prepares for the next Winter Olympics held from February 7 to February 23, 2014 . This will be the first time for the Russian Federation to host this event. Russian PM Wladimir Putin decided to organize the Olympic games in one of the warmest regions of Russia. This city, picturesquely placed at the shores of Black Sea, neglected for years, is to become Russia’s next visit card, even though it borders Russia’s six autonomous North Caucasus republics, home of the Chechen wars and the Abkhaz conflict zone. The Federal Security Service (FSB) warns, that the 2014 Games are under serious threat of a terrorist attack, as Russian authorities may have problems to guarantee the security of athletes or fans attending the games. But there is no stopping it now for Putin, as the Olympics are to be the goal of his and President Miedwiediew’s era. The cost could total 39 billion USD, in comparison to Vancouver’s 1,5 billion. Faced with these facts, chances are poor for the protesting citizens of Sochi, ecologists, numerous international organizations and NGOs. Russia’s independent environmentalists warn that developers’ plans for Sochi could damage the unique landscape of the region, where some territories are protected as natural UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The most controversial plan concerns construction of the combined railway and motor road connecting the Adler airport and the mountain cluster in Krasnaya Polyana (costing 7 billion USD) . This could destroy the unique valley of the River Msympta, causing severe change of climate and liquidation of many species of plants and animals, said Dmitry Kaptsov, Vice-Coordinator of Environmental Watch on North Caucasus. The Ministry of Ecology agrees, but decisions have already been made. A special Olimpic law was passed in December 2009, to secure the investors from the protesting groups. Few thousand people are to be displaced.
