Worldwide, two to three million people are estimated to be permanently disabled because of leprosy. India has the greatest number of cases . Numerous organizations and volunteers offer aid to the leprosy affected people. Among them, Poles.
In the years 2009 and 2010 I visited three places where they battled and still battle leprosy. First was Puri (Orissa State). In the year 1975 Polish missionary Father Marian Zelazek created and ran for thirty years, a center, to help patients with leprosy and their families.
He organized work for them, as well as education. He died at the colony in 2006. Today, the colony functions well, manufacturing cords and ropes, shoes, bandages. Children attend the Beatrix School, built close to the colony. Jeevodaya, near Raipur, central India, came second with the Jeevodaya Center created in 1969 by Polish missionary doctor Father Adam Wisniewski. Doctor Helena Pyz, also from Poland, lives and works there now, caring for the leprosy affected families. Over four hundred children  from  the lepper colonies of the Chattiharth State attend the Center's school.

In the beginning of the year 2010 I travelled to Ramgarh, where for the past twenty years Sister Stephanie of the Franciscan Order, from the Silesia region in Poland, has been treating leprosy patients as well as teaching them, organizing  their work, helping out with domestic and family problems. Every day she visits one of the three colonies. The citizens of the colony call her "Didi", which refers to "older sister".
In all  those colonies, apart from medical care, the most important problems are poverty and lack of education. The part of the  leprosy colonies map doubles the map showing the most poor regions of the country. Special care is needed for the children coming from leprosy affected families. It is important, that once they have grown up and freed from the ghetto of the leprosy colony, they will  lead independent lives.
